Pitchfork's Surprisingly Good (8.0) Review of Flockaveli

Flockaveli is for people who find M.O.P. too polite, Silkk the Shocker too relaxed, and Blaq Poet too introspective. Waka Flocka Flame is an unrepentant street-rap hardhead-- as much a descendant of New York aggro-thugs like DMX or Screwball as early 2000s southern club rappers. Producer Lex Luger provides most of Flockaveli's thunderous accompaniment, while a parade of no-name/street-fame character-rappers (plus, inexplicably, Wale) give the album the chaotic tone of a street brawl. But at the record's violent core, Waka Flocka Flame stands as a gangsta rap giant whose lack of range is more than made up for by his grizzled bark.

Anyone coming to this record expecting wordplay, or criticizing it for its lack thereof, is missing the point completely: Flockaveli thrives on Waka's fresh approach to the same generation gap-widening narrative that's driven street rap since before N.W.A. That doesn't mean he can't rap; instead, Waka sells on the way his personality bleeds through his vocals and phrasing, the way his voice rolls, "I'ma die for this, shawty, I swwweartogod," on "Hard in Da Paint", imprinting his vocals in the most memorable possible way: "Mizz-ayy management, shit, that my motherrr."

Pixies Give Away 2004 Coachella Performance

Reunited alt-rock pioneers Pixies are relaunching their website, and to mark the occasion, they're giving away a free live show recording. It's a doozy: The band's triumphant set atCoachella 2004, an early example of the band in post-reunion fighting form. You can download the 20-song, hour-long set at this website.


The band will upload new live show recordings every week to their site, which will be available for purchase. Right now, in addition to the Coachella set, you can buy a show from 1988 in Manchester, England, as well as the band's first reunion show, which took place April 13, 2004 in Minneapolis. To help keep the series and the rest of the website going, the band is asking fans to share their own photos and videos of Pixies shows on the website.

Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig to Appear on New @foofighters LP

In an interview with Radio 1's Zane Lowe, former Nirvana drummer/current @foofighters leader Dave Grohl revealed that his ex-Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic will guest on bass on the new Foo Fighters record. The band is currently at work on the album, recording inGrohl's garage. Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana's Nevermind, is behind the boards. That means we've got three of the four people most responsible for Nevermind, all on one record together. A few days ago, the Foo Fighters' Twitter posted a photo of all three together (shown above).

The Black Keys to Release Box Set

On Black Friday, November 26, Ohio blues-rockers the Black Keys will release a special limited edition, numbered box set version of their 2010 album Brothers. The set includes the album in two formats (CD and double 45-rpm vinyl), a bonus 10" record with six previously unreleased live songs, and a limited-edition poster.

FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY!!!  Finally LimeWire got shut down and I'm not hurt about it at all.  If you've ever talked to me about LimeWire or brought it up in my presence, then you know I am completely against the program.  So hearing that a judge ordered them to shut down naturally made me chuckle a little.

Software company LimeWire shut down its file sharing services on the order of a federal judge after being found liable for “a substantial amount of copyright infringement” in case brought against the company by the RIAA. RIP, peer-to-peer.

On Tuesday, Judge Kimba Wood ordered LimeWire to stop “searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality… The case was four years old, and an order like this seemed likely after Judge Wood ruled in May that LimeWire was aware of the scope of copyright infringement on its site. [Gawker]

I say good riddance, and FUCK LIMEWIRE.

@diplo's got a dubstep compliation, Blow Your Head Volume 1: Diplo Presents Dubstep, out November 2 via his Mad Decent imprint. The comp includes a broken-beat banger with @LilJon, "U Don't Like Me", and said banger has an immensely entertaining video to go with it. In the clip, surprisingly true-to-life (if still a little low-rent) video game versions of the DJ and the crunk capo go head to head in various situations, including dancing, fighting, and fighting underwater. Chickens are thrown, golf clubs are wielded, and someone gets eaten by a huge animal at the end (wait for it!). It's a lot of fun to watch.

Reggae Legend Gregory Isaacs Dies at 59

Reggae legend Gregory Isaacs died of lung cancer this morning at his home in London at the age of 59. Isaacs pioneered the slinky, seductive reggae subgenre lovers rock, and he left behind a endless string of international hits that spanned the 1970s and 1980s. Though he never shied away from political material, he's better known for the love songs he delivered in a ridiculously smooth tenor, the kind of voice that brought to mind Marvin Gaye.

Crystal Castles Work with Robert Smith on Single

You'd think that electro-punk terrors Crystal Castles don't play too well with other, but their latest, BNM'd self-titled effort has already been reworked by Sonic Youth's Thurston Mooreand No Age. The band's next collaborator is even more high-profile (and out of leftfield) than those previous two: The Cure's Robert Smith.


The irascible goth-rock king will lend his moody vocals to Crystal Castles cut "Not In Love", and will see release on December 6 via Fiction. The single will be backed by acoustic (!) demos of fellow album cuts "Celestica" and "Suffocation". So, yeah, safe to say that everything on this release will be a fascinating listen at the very least.

The Books - I Didn't Know That [Video]

Just as sound collage alchemists the Books' music are loaded with clever samples and obscure curios, their videos are frequently made up of the same formula as well, including the clip for "I Didn't Know That", from the Books' latest album, The Way Out. Put together by Books member Nick Zammuto, the video takes what looks to be footage from an instructional film on playing golf and juxtaposes it rhythmically with the music, adding some flashy font effects and interspersing some exploding-car footage as well. Nike launches LeBron James "Rise" Commercial

LeBron and Nike unleashed a 90-second commercial pondering all the questions and criticisms heaved his direction since July 8th – including those from Sir Charles Barkley with a reenactment of his legendary ad. The inspiration derives from Maya Angelou’s iconic “Still I Rise” and is one Ohio’s shunned son probably turned to for solace frequently. LeBron appears happy, even if the rest of the world views the glass half-empty.
